Gods and Goddesses 101

All Gods and Goddesses are one. Yet each individual deity has its own personality. All of nature is a deity and yet each item in nature has a spirit- has a name.. is deity.  We are divine- the energy of divinity is a part of us.  As Pagans, we emphasize the bright aspects of the Divine and magick because this gives us purpose to grow and evolve to higher realms. We do not bow in fear but out of respect- well sometimes fear but it is not the fear of eternal damnation but more of the fear the tornado is gonna get ya.

Paganism above all else -is an earth religion -- a re-linking with the life-force of nature, both on this planet and in the stars and space beyond. We honor the old Goddesses and Gods, including the Triple Goddess of the waxing, full, and waning moon, and the Horned God of the sun and animal life, as visualizations of immanent nature.  We also see them as personification of the divine male and female. In addition, they are separate Gods and Goddesses, each with their own personalities, habits, faults, likes and dislikes and cultures. We also honor those deities without gender or ones whose gender ebbs and flows. I know it is hard to wrap your mind around these paradoxical ideas, but the view you take on them depends on what you are trying to do or if they have spoken to you.

Paganism is different than what I have just said for many people. they may agree with parts but not others. the very ONE thing we CAN say is that Pagans see the divine in nature and try their best to honor that.

Our religion is not a series of precepts or beliefs, rather we believe that we each have within ourselves the capacity to reach out and experience the mystery -- that feeling of ineffable oneness with all Life. Those who wish to experience this transcendence must work, and create, and participate in their individual religious and spiritual lives. For this reason, our covens, circles or tribes are small groups which give room for each individual to contribute to the efforts of the group by self-knowledge and creative experimentation within the agreed-upon group structure or tradition.

There are many paths to spiritual growth. Ours is a participatory revelation, a celebratory action leading to greater understanding of oneself and the universe. We believe there is much to learn by studying our past, through myth, through ritual drama, through poetry and music, through love and through living in harmony with the Earth.

A lot of books (and over-eager beginners) skip right over what I consider to be important basics. Ours is about spirituality, magic and enlightenment. So, the basic steps involve getting to know who the gods are, where the energy to do magic comes from, and how enlightenment fits into the picture.

There can be a lot to understand about the craft before you get to the point of doing complicated spells or magick. but the easy stuff can be done in very beginning as long as you are aware of the basics.

At the very least you need to develop a relationship with a goddess, a god and the elements. You need to know where Thorn Rose comes from. You need to know various options for setting up an altar. You need to have a very good understanding of energy including where it comes from, what it is, and what it can do. You need to understand the consequences of each possible magical act. You need to know how to divine what those possible outcomes can be. Most of all you need to understand how to live a spiritual life.

Does the God really die?

The reality is that the death of the God during the Wheel of the year is not the same as our eventual death.  Our death will be more like the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly.  When we die and are re-born the materials will be the same but the form will definitely be different. The God transforms but he transforms between his different aspects.  For him the transformation of death is not the same because he cycles through his aspects.  The God will always be the God; though we will live again it will not be the same.

How do we begin to honor the Gods?

Pagans strive to show honor to their Gods and Goddesses every day, all day, not merely during ritual. One way this can be done is to set up one or more shrines, groves or sanctuaries where you can visit with the gods and meditate at least once each day. If setting up a permanent meditation spot is not practical find some quiet space and time to devote a few moments acknowledging the gods, re-dedicating yourself to them and thanking them for what you have learned and gained through Wicca.

We honor the gods through "walking the walk" not merely "talking the talk" of Wicca. We strive to set a good example by always remember the Three-Fold Law, by recycling (and reminding others to), and being aware and appreciative of all we have.

Understand that the gods are as individual as humans and that it is not possible to get to know them on a personal level without respecting their individuality.
